Model:
Mini City E qwith 1275cc engine

Year:
1988

Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Mini leaks oil lots...to the point the parents have banned me from parking on the drive which I dont like the idea of...so I have purchased this http://www.minispare...=...5775&title= as its cheap and will be the 1st attempt at stopping any oil leaks... I know the engine isnt leaking around the rocker areas so it must be lowish down. There seems to be oil droplets on the underside of the sump pan to.

How do I fit this? http://www.minispare...=...5775&title=
I cant see anywhere in my haynes manual =(

Many thanks

Karl

there are instructions on the link for the part!
Basically, disconnect the gear linkage, lever out the old seal and then fit the alloy sleve with the o ring and finally push the new seal into place. should take about 20-30 mins to do it once you have drained the oil!

DON'T remove the old seal before you have drained the oil or it will drain all over you!!

"This kit consists of one alloy sleeve with a groove on the outside to locate the O ring, the new "O" ring, a rod seal and a gaiter. To fit the kit simply remove the old gaiter if fitted and then the old oil seal. Fit the sleeve with the "O"ring fitted and slide over the rod into the gearbox. If the car was already fitted with a sleeve, remove old one before replacing and then fit the main seal. The dust cover fits up against the seal to prevent road debris getting at the seal."

Hmm although to be fair didnt mention about taping that pin out (whats good for this as I dont have the tool) or draining the oil out! lol Could of been messy!

You'll need a punch of the right size to knock the pin out. Put the car in reverse first.

Will a suitable sized screwdriver do?

Nope.

If you use a screw driver you'll mash the end of the roll pin up and make it very hard to remove.

Quick search would've helped...

http://www.theminifo...howtopic=161752

Also have a look at the diff output oil seals if after changing this gear rod oil seal it's still leaking...

I'm sure both jobs are in the Haynes manual mate.

After changing both on mine all leaks stopped.

Sorry, I should of used the search but I do hate it as well!

Ok progress, pin out, old seal off now the bit where I am stuck...

I am not sure if the metal sleeve and o ring is already fitted to my car or not...the minispares instructions say: to removed the old 1 if fitted...well i cant tell if there is 1 fitted... help?

Also whilst doing the oil change I found a hell of a lot of metal bits on the sump magnet...more then i saw out of my old 998cc and enough for my neighbour to be suprised...what could this be *gulp*

Many thanks

Karl

im 80% confident it is the part i need to remove...however I can see no way of doing this and do not have a dremel to drill two small holes for a screw to be a handle to pull this out...how do i get it out?

many thanks

Karl

First try putting a screwdriver through the hole in the selector rod and repeatedly move it in and out. The seal/sleeve should be loosened and if your lucky wiggle itself out. If not you'll need to try and prise it out with a screwdriver - This will only really work if its another seal in there like I had, not sure it'll work if its an alloy sleeve...
