Hi, I've just bought what I think is a 1275 metro engine but the rivited i.d. plate near the cylinder head has been taken off.

There is a number cast into the head, next to the centre rocker arms. It reads 29A6. The block has a cast code into it: WFM 1024 F (the last F is big).

The thermostat mounting holes are square to the front of the head, indicating a metro engine. There are no tappet covers. The hole that usually leads from the head to the heater matrix in the cabin is professionally plugged.

Any ideas on what year this engine might be? Any more information about it?

Thanks

Check your V5 for the engine number?

Is there not a number on a plate rivited to the top front part of the block where it sticks out under the head (on the right hand side)?
This will give you the identification number....
Eg;
12H907PH101
From that you can work out exactly what you have!

Unfortunately the casting numbers mean nothing...

I'm afraid you're down to measuring,

is there a difference between the BL 1275 and the MG 1275? If I post a picture of the engine would you have a better chance of identifying it?

here is a photo of the engine, the rocker cover isn't the original one I don't think.

Definitely a metro engine in origin, but has been fitted in a mini at some stage

and no an MG metro 1275 is just a different specification ordinary 1275, blocks exactly the same.

To give you an idea of what it's origins are, you're going to have to take the head off... check the valve sizes, and work out the compression ratio..

If you have the original carb attached, then read the code off that, and check on www.burlen.co.uk what it was originally attached to.

I see, thanks for your help. If the inlet valves are 35.7mm diameter it's a metro I read somewhere. Luckily I'm doing a full engine rebuild.

Thanks again for your help.

Having a 1.4" inlets does suggest MG metro pre conversion to unleaded.

If the thermostat sits on a raised casting then, its a mg spec head, with the casting for the heater take off undrilled it will be metro,Mg or sport, or vanden plas, larger valves as said, the flat top heads are fitted to the slow 1275s and the mini sprite, the block is pretty hard to tell what model there from but if the head looks like it belongs, should be all of the same origin, mg has a better cam shaft than the rest, loads of block specs, compression varies, without the plate youll have to guess or get measuring, Ive got 14 1275s here and alll are different,Lob it in Drive
