Hey i have recently heard about this place, which is based in watton, near norwich in norfolk. They have 7 bays equipped with lifts ramps tools etc and it only costs 5 pounds an hour, including tool hire, and they even have a friendly mechanic to help you out! Certainly looks good to me..when i come to do some serious work on tess ill certainly be taking her down there..i think this should become a sticky because i think its a really good idea and might potentially save you money! Looks interesting, but the insurance and heath and safety red tape must be a nightmare! Letting un-trained people use that sort of equiptment.

In 1973...a group of classic car enthusiasts wanted somewhere to restore there cars. They found an old railway building in Washington tyne and wear. The group began to rent this building and abit of land, allowing new people to come in the premises to help with the rent. 36Years on, the building is owned, run by a comittee of 12 members and as over 200 members.

Each member pays £25 per year. Inside the workshops, there are 24 permanent bays to restore you car, rented for 7.50 per week. And 3 temperoary bays which can be booked for a max of 4 or 8 weeks depending on which bay. Theres a 4 poster ramp, machine shop, mess room for lunch, club room with pool table/scaletrix, kitchen for cooking on show days, toilets and office.

Basically £25 a year gets you membership. Which means u can book the use of the ramp etc etc. If you have the ramp booked, you collect keys from the comittee and return them when youve finished at the end of the day. Free of charge. So basically if you only ever used the ramp, thats as much ramp time as you need for £25 a year (within moderate use ofcourse)

The £7.50 rental covers the bays and electricity. The club is non profit so any excess money gets spent on new machines and repairs to the club.

Everything is at your own risk, contents aswell is at your own risk and we ask for people to insure there own gear if they require that. We have rules and terms, which must be read, an introduction tour and signed deceleration to say you accept that.

Basically, anyone with a big premises could do something like this and make a good community of car restorers locally.

We believe this is the only type of organisation like this in the UK or at least it was for a good 20years or so.

this is done at most petrol stations here in Sweden not sure what it costs but it isn't expensive

really? petrol stations here just rip you off with fuel tax! hmm..i didnt know anyone else did it although i can imagine it would be a good business idea..25 pound a year isnt all that much, but i guess if each bay has a few people a year using it thats a few hundred at least per bay..shame i live a long way from tyne and wear!!

north east restoration club is fantastic... not only the cheap rental/membership charges that jordie has already pointed out but the skills and knowledge of the other members are priceless, so willing to help and teach you new things

There used to be a DIY garage in Aberdeen, but it closed down due to lack of interest a few years ago now. No idea what the prices were like though.
