Hi all,
Few months back i was overtaken by a very very cool looking hot rod,
it had a vintage body (lots of large curves and the small oval rear window)
and i was wondering, where do you get something like that? where can you pick up the body? and get all the kit to turn it into a hot rod? i'd love to do a build but haven't got a clue where i'd start to look.
All google brings up is alot of american sites, even if i click 'uk sites only'
Any help or advise would be great...
(guessing that DOG will be one with all the know)

This all depends on how you want to do it!
Also dependes on what type/style of Hot Rod you want.
The more traditional way is to find an old steel car!
Ford Populars are (ironically) popular because of their shape and general construction. Many parts and panels can still be bought from the sidevalve owners club and Mr Pop Brown CLICKY HERE will supply all manner of original and custom parts.
With the car you can buy replacement custom chassis rails and then you'll need to fit your own running gear, anything from an old Sierra, or the traditional Jag rear end (someone even fitted the running gear from a Sierra 4x4!).
Then choose your engine, 1300cc,1600cc,2000cc, V6, V8 even V12 if you want to get scary! Or how about a modern Vtec engine mated to a 'normal' inline gearbox? Or if your feeling brave how about something Japanese?
The difficulty is trying to find a reasonable car in a half decent condition.
The other option is to buy a glassfibre shell and seperate chassis. This can be a good option as the choice is far wider and can work out cheaper in the long run because your not having to replace rusty panels and the like.
Try having a look here RODLINE The body tubs are good quality and the guys there will advise you on some of your choices of running gear and engines.
Another great firm is Markhams and have a look at their links as there is some great info there.
A good link is here UK HOT RODS, all manner of info and links.
Also have a look at the newsagents for copies of Street Machine and Custom Car magazines. These will have vast amounts of info and inspiration!
Also check Ebay for unfinished projects and even unstarted projects.
BUT..... Lets not get too excited at the moment! Talking from experience, building a Rod can be daunting, frustrating and expensive (if you let get out of control).
You'll maybe need to learn a couple of new skills, but advice is always about. Get used to long nghts in the garage, sometimes the seemingly simplest of jobs can turn into a complete nightmare.
My best advice is:-
To get as much info as possible first.
Come up with an idea on how it should look, what engine/running gear to use, even wheels and tyres and STICK TO THE PLAN.
Listen to the advice of others, go to a few car shows and ask about, or ask parts suppliers and custom specialists.
DON'T get too carried away with your plans. Being as its your first build try and keep to tried and tested methods. The car can always be changed later if you want and feel more confident doing it.
Try and join a club.
Above all, always look towards the finished product. It may not be the best in the world but it'll be yours and a lot of your own hard work and once its driving A WHOLE LOAD OF FUN!

Yeah, we should be making a few American shows next year and we will be taking the original rod, Henry Ford's first v8, the model 18
Here is the one in my family, 3.6 flathead v8
As for finding them
classic amercian magazine is superb, loads of classifieds in the back and a good read too

Its a bit of a trek, but Ashby Folville near Melton mowbray is not a million miles away. Second tuesday evening of each month from April, anything and everything turns up at the cricket pitch. Often a thousand cars in total turn up, £2 on the gate gets your car into the field if its interesting or there is another carpark too for other cars.
