Description of problem: How to reduce emissions?

HIF38 Carb with no CAT

Hi All

I put my Mini through MOT for the first time a couple of days ago, one of the failure reasons is that it failed the emissions test, quite badly too. The CO2 and HC values were nearly three times what they should be.

How can I reduce the emissions? I understand that I need to tune my carb, how?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Sounds like it needs a good service.

Make sure the air filter isn't blocked first though

If all else is ok though and its just the mixture thats to rich, then left side of the carb there is the mixture screw its inset in a hole.
Somebody will correct me but I think its unscrew to weaken the mixture on a HIF
Might be an idea to see if the MOT place will adjust it for you, they can check the reading as they adjust.

Thanks,

I'll try and weaken the mixture myself first and then ask the MOT place to make the final adjustments when I go in for the re-test.

But DO take the air filter out - of course - if the engine is badly worn/burning oil - it may not be able to pass the test. I would also invest in a new set of spark plugs - and make sure the exhaust is in good condition with no leaks. A really good 'burn' up the motorway is also a good idea just before the 'test' !
