Hi everyone,

I'm very new to the Forum and don't have much mechanical know-how, so please be patient!

My Mini is a bit of a mish-mash - a previous owner put the plates from a 1971 Morris Mini on a later chassis (I think early '90s) and has fitted a replacement 1275cc Metro engine, along with twin carbs.

I took it out for a run this evening, it was low on fuel, but still running very smoothly. As I neared the petrol station, I noticed the car lose power when I put it into third (as if I didn't have enough revs for that gear), but I dropped it back into second and it was fine from there until the petrol station.

I filled it with the correct fuel (unleaded), but a couple of minutes down the road noticed the same problem in third. I dropped it down into second, then first, but by this stage the car had lost all power and as I pulled into a layby it just cut out. Needless to say I had to be towed home!

When I turn the key, it turns over absolutely fine, but the engine just doesn't fire.

I had a fuel leak problem with it a few weeks ago (it was a leaky float chamber) but this was fixed professionally and the car has been running fine since.

Does anyone have any suggestions of things I can try before taking it down to the garage again?! Does it sound like a fuel problem or could it be anything else? A neighbour suggested that because it was low on fuel it could have pulled some gunk through from the bottom of the petrol tank.

Another thing worth mentioning is that I topped it up with some oil a couple of days ago. It was pretty cheap stuff, but it did say it was suitable for all petrol engines.

Any help would be very, very much appreciated!

Thanks

Rob
