1985 998 manual verto clutch

so whats happened is that the smallest also the longest bolt that aligns the clutch slave has ripped out the threads in the aluminum flywheel cover!!! i had tryed to fix it with grip fill but no luck!! :closed:

this is a major problem car going for tracking tomorrow. has anyone got any solutions to this??

is it safe possible to re thread the hole to a bigger bolt without breking through the housing??

really dont want to have to fit a new housing :w00t: :closed:

If you can get hold of a 1/4" unf wire thread insert kit, helicoil or recoil or armstrong etc.......... this would allow you to use the existing bolt after the fix has been performed..................

J-B Weld is excellent stuff - will sort you out very quickly.....just let it set and tap the thread, or if you never want to get the bolts out again pop some in insert bolts and leave for a few hours to cure.....

J-B weld may get you through the next couple of days but it really isn't a good permanent fix. There is 5-Minute JB weld and there is the "good" stuff that takes 24 hours to cure. Even then, full strength isn't reached for several days.

If possible, find a HeliCoil kit as Martin suggested and use that. If not (this question is aimed at Martin) would it be possible to carefully drill the rest of the way through the clutch cover, then tap 1/4 UNF all the way through and use a longer bolt? (As long as it's not so long that it hits the clutch assembly of course). This would allow you to continue using the car indefinitely. The HeliCoil could be inserted when and if you wanted to address this and go back to the shorter bolt.

Unusual to have a UNF thread in an alloy component. If that's right - it's no wonder it has stripped!

Just checked a few covers all of them are 1/4" UNF...... bit unusual having a UNF thread in alloy but needs must.....
and a 1/4" unf bolt is a lot stronger than a 1/4" unc bolt or screw

You could drill it and tap it 5/16" UNF and drill out the hole in the support plate to sit. That would be the easiest and quickest way to get a permanent fix. You would need a sleeve of the right length at 5/16" int diameter, but you could use a stack of nuts to suit instead if necessary.
