[b]Model; Mini city
[b]Year:1992
Hi, my girlfriend has a 1992 mini city ( completely standard ) which has always been well maintained and trouble free. However, over the past week it suddenly has an overpowering petrol smell inside the car. This gets worse under acceleration and has got so bad she's actually had to stop the car and get out.
I've checked everything I can think of and see. Fuel pipes, breather, carb etc. There's no visible leaks and it doesn't smell under the bonnet, just in the car and just when actually on the move.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Have you checked the breather-come-overflow pipe on the top of the petrol tank?

yeah...look in the boot mate... probably in there. check your over flow pipe like Mars said and check your petrol line that delivers petrol to the engine and you could also check the seal where your sending unit is on the side where the two wires hook up at.

Look at the fuel overflow pipe of the float chamber check for leaks.
EDIT: I misread ' it doesn't smell under the bonnet'. Is the tank breather blocked, or its grommet worn?

i would check the breather like everyone else said if i was you, especially if your girlfriend topped up a full tank of petrol. It may also be worth checking its not leaking out of the petrol cap as most always seem to.
