local place to me charges 70 for a rebore. Pistons vary depending on size, manufacter etc.

I bought my own pistons and gave them to him to do the rebore. I got it done for 50 cash

I think you may be asking the wrong question!!!

The actual rebore of the engine block will cost less than 100, I think you really want to know how much it would cost to have the smoking engine fixed?

In which case your price of 1000 is much closer to the mark!!

well pistons could cost between 80-500 depending on type and size etc.
Cost of the machine work = rebore.

And if your incapable of doing the removal of the engine, the stripdown and the rebuild and refit, then thats a good lot of labour.

So if you got someone to do the full job for you, including removing engine and refitting, it could well be 1000.

It depends on whether you do the work yourself.
Parts would typically be something like:
150 for a set of 21253 Hepolite
30 for block gaskets inc 'red' seal.
25 oil pump
15 cam followers
50 for big end, main and crank thrust bearings
12 for head gasket
5 timing chain
Maybe 20 for other odds and ends.

Then there is machining;

65 for re-bore another 0.020" (assuming pistons are available)
50 for crank re-grind (if necessary)
20 for decking the block (if necessary)
30 to press out old gudgeon pins and fit new pistons to rods.

That comes to 452

Then there is the labour to do a proper build, if you don't do it yourself. If the engine has to be removed from the block, completely stripped and cleaned and measured. the re-assembled, including a 'dummy-build' prior to final build, then all put together, timed and the flywheel and clutch put on, it could be about 25 hours at whatever rate you have to pay. That does all add up.

But, do it all yourself and all you need is a bit of good advice and a few decent tools inc. a flywheel puller.

Perhaps get a list of costs together and see if its not cheaper to swap engines over, that way you will have the original engine to take apart at your own leisure and learn about how they are put together - will help with confidence :D

At least when it's all been done by yourself you know what you have.
