For those who at anytime rebuild or replace their gearbox, there is a bearing which sits on the end of the first motion shaft, next to the input gear, which has a matching bearing race in the transfer case. It is more often than not that the bearing is broken when removing it, necessitating the replacement of both the bearing and its race.

This video how to shows an actual bearing race being removed from the transfer case. It's not magic, no mirrors are used, but I did cut the video slightly :cheese:

Enjoy.....

LOL. Having a little truble with your blow torch there :cheese:

This is similar to what we do at work to remove the centrafugal impellor off the high speed shaft. We use a temperature indicator though, heat it to the point when, you spit on it, it sizzles. Only difference is we are dealing with £10000 highly balanced components  requiring a little more finesse :cheese:

what about the idler bearing, does that work with that too???

I'm saying nothing.....

apart from...

what about the idler bearing, does that work with that too???

Nope, you still need a blind bearing extractor to get that out...

Before I had a bearing puller set, I used the following:-

A self tapper
A hammer
A pot of grease
A screwdriver
A GOOD set of safety goggles

Method:-

1.) Place transfer case clutch side down.
2.) Screw the self tapper into the drain hole - tight fit.
3.) Fill shaft hole with grease.
4.) Fit "old" idler gear gently into place.
5.) Place safety goggles over ones eyes - and any bystanders
6.) Apply sharp taps to the idler gear.

This will take a little time and is a bit messy and if you choose not to wear your safety goggles then potentially very dangerous.

But it DOES work, it works by hydraulics :smartass:

Years ago before i got the pukka Rover tools, i used to weld an old bolt to the bearing (and the nose bearing race) to pull it out...

the heat of the weld also helped to free the grip the alloy had on the bearing.

Dave
