Hi we have just brought another mini(- the lady of the house could not wait for the restoration project to be finished!)
Due to the delights of ebay we have got the new car (registered on a Q plate but I suspect it is late 70's body with 1275 metro engine) home and found a few faults that I have got to rectify immediately before it can be used as a daily driver.
I believe that both front bearings are shot and I suspect that ball joints on the passenger side have gone as well. It definetly needs a new wheel stud as the previous owner had stuck the wheel nut back on with mastic!!
As I am really pushed for time, is it possible for me to change the front swivel hubs over from my mini 30 and place them on the Q plate? Will this affect the bearings at all as they will be on different driveshafts? I would not ask but I only really have tommorrow to change both sides before we need the car and I am not convinced that I can source new parts quick enough? The donor hubs are good and have had less than 1500miles since I changed all of the above. Is there any difference between a 1275 driveshaft and a 998?Both cars are disc braked.
Sorry for all the questions but I really need to get on with this ASAP.
Cheers Matt

It should be absolutely fine. You don't need to put an different shaft through the wheel bearing, just fit the entire built hub including CV onto the new car's driveshaft. It'll be a lot quicker that way. All you should need in terms of new parts is a shot of new CV grease to top up any that you loose, you won't even need new split pins if you don't strip the CV joints.

Thats great news- Thanks. I will do that tomorrow and buy the new parts to replace on the mini 30.
Do you know how to replace a wheel stud?- I have looked through the haynes manual and the only thing I can find is an image which appears to show a splined end. Is it a case of heating it up and hitting it hard or are they pressed in?
Thanks again.

No heat needed, they are just a press fit. Hit the broken one into the drive flange with a punch and it will fall through. Press the new one in as far as you can and make sure the spline is aligned, then use the wheel and nut to make sure it's pulled fully home. Longer studs can only be fitted with the flange removed from the disc but most times standard length studs will slide straight in.

i found that a 40 ouncher hammer and punch makes light work of front studs
then pull the new stud threw from the back and tighten with an open ended wheel nut
job done
