Morris Mini
1970
The car were running last summer for a couple of weeks. After some renovation (new wheel bearings, pot joints, brakes, new oil and filter) and about a year I was planning to clean out the cooler and flush out the system since it should be changed every now and then. When I opened the lid I saw a terrible thing and I wonder what I should do? first I rinsed the system and cooler, then I poured in new cooling liquid. I have been running the motor a little bit but not much so I can't tell if the system is leaking but it probably is.
Questions.
*If it is leaking should I be able to see it after running the motor for short while? After like a mile?
*If it is, what should I do?

Well, it's not oil. Well I don't think so.

Oil and water tend to go milky together. You look like you have a radiator filled with rare bird eggs.

I say check the oil (if it goes one way, bound to go the other). Dump current coolant, flush rad both ways if you can, fill up with just deionised or distilled I never remember which water. Run for a bit, see how it looks. Happens again drop it and investigate oil again.

Edit

Oh, theres also a test kit to see if hydrocarbons from combustion are in the water as well. Tends to be called a sniffer test, might be worth asking local garage for a test or mobile mechanic if they can do it.

Edit again,

One more thing, your rads not full. I always do mine to the top, where is your water level ?

If you fill the rad, you've got no room for expansion when it heats up.

I think it's 10mm below the neck is what it's meant to be.

I got a pressure release cap, I just let that kick in.

Everyone should have a pressure release cap realy.

Just makes less mess to put the right amount in.

First I changed the oil.
Then the cooler, I filled it up to the top and then let the overpressure valve take care of the rest. The picture show how it looked before I drained the cooler and flushed it (both ways). I topped up with normal water, ran it for a mile or so and then drained it once again before a put glycol in the cooler. Since then I've only driven approx 1 mile witht he car and so far I can't see anything strange, neither on the oil or coolant water.

Maybe the coolant were so old? Maybe that could be one of the reasons?

Thanks for your responses, Joel
