HEY GUYS I HAVE A 96 SPI AUTO THAT JUST WONT START!! for some reason it has no spark...ive changed the coil several times, checked all the fuses, reset the inertia switch. ive read the alarm ecu (which i have no idea what that is or looks like) could also be the cause to it not starting if its sending out the code. ive checked all the wires that need power to the coil and they seem all fine...it would help if anyone had a wire diagram to double check.. but im running out ideas can anyone help!!! im getting desperate.. might even look into swaping spi to carb if i cant figure it out...thanks
Hi,
Is it a Japanese SPI with A/C? If it is, chances are that there is no alarm with inmobiliser.
Does it crank/turn over at all? If it does not, there is an inhibitor switch for the gear selector that prevents starting in gear. It should have a white/light green wire going to the switch and a black one to earth. Check for continuity to ground.
If the engine cranks, is there fuel coming out of the injector? If not, it could be the crank sensor.
Beyond that, you need Sprocket, he is the Guru.
Hope that helps,
Ivan

i dont believe it has a alarm ecu..ive heard jap spec motors dont have them. the car does crank so it wouldnt be that, how do i check if theres gas??? ive been looking for spark as there isnt any. ive grounded the coil wire and had a buddy crank as i checked for spark but i havent seen any...
Supposedly, if the crank position sensor is bad or dirty, there will be no spark or injection. I have not experienced it on the Mini (yet) but on GM TBI that is very similar to the SPI, you can see the fuel coming out of the injector with the air filter off. The spray should hit the butterfly valve similar to what you see with a carb.
