im running a 1274 with hif44 and stage one with a BBW needle fitted. I have heard that most people have issues with these needles and most tend to get BDL instead. do you think its worth swapping?

Depends on what your symptoms are. Both needles are nigh on identical upto station 7 and from then on the BBW is slightly richer so if you want it slightly leaner at part and full throttle then yes change.

It depends on how much your engine breathe. Whats the plugs colour like after a good run?
BBW is richer at top end and slightly leaner in the firsts sectors, actually it works better at different stages of tuning and different timing.
Using a BDL you'll have better mpg and no flooding issues. Its probably the best needle for a lightly tuned 1275, a bit like the AAA needle is for small bores (exept heavily tuned engines of course!).

well the car seems to be drinking petrol and seems to bog down (the car makes the noise, but doesnt really do much, as if it hesitates)

Is everything else on the car okay? Ignition system? Valve clearances?
Do you know what spring you are using in your carb?
Once you have checked everything else then for the price of a new needle it may be worth trying the BDL as it won't make a huge amount of difference for most of the operating range.
Of course the BEST solution is to take your car to a rolling road where a GOOD operator will be able to modify a needle to suit your car perfectly!
