There are plenty of complaints that the K&N won't stay put and pops off for fun, when. in reality, its how people fit them thats the real problem. I had no problems what so ever with mine after I realised what I was doing wrong.
The correct way to fit a K&N to an SPi manifold, is to warm up the engine and turn it off. Clean ALL traces of dirt and oil from around the top edge of the throttle body/ injector housing. Clean all traces of oil from the inside edge of the lip on the K&N. Place the K&N onto the injector housing and leave it for 5 to 10 minuets so that it warms up with the residual heat from the engine. THEN tighten the jubilee clip ONLY enough so that the filter does not move making sure that the clip is as close to the bottom of the lip all the way round. Cranking up the jubille clip will only promote the filter to pop off and any traces of oil will just help it.
I will never ever use a pipercross filter again. If you oil them to increase the filter performance, engine performance suffers. Don't oil the filter and performance migh not suffer, but gritty crap gets into the engine. An un oiled filter at idle needs more air or less fuel compared to a K&N filter which shows how crap they are.
Oh and the Pipercross looks naff, but then, that might just be my preference.
If you want the best, buy K&N

The K&N is held on with a big Jubilee clip.

I have to agree with Sprocket. Foam filters are not filters, the pores through them are massive. They will stop insects and small birds getting into your engine but anything that is small enough to actually be a problem anyway can easily pass right through one.
Hahaha. I hope it stops small birds. I think if my mini had an encounter with one, the bird would probably end up better off.
Just bought a K&N air filter. Cheers for your comment . I will be fitting it tonight hopefully. Glad bungle said what he did about the pipes as well. My red vacuum one has been worrying me for a long time. It's one of the things that pushed me to getting a K&N. Anyone notice a difference? Except the sound of course.
I feel like a woman thats just bought new shoes. I never buy anything material for myself. Got the K&N plus an arm rest
