not 100% sure but an amp has an rca input so you would just need a rca to 3.5 jack connection. thats a good idea though i may be tempted to do this aswell as i dont bother using anything other then the aux input on the stero anyway

What Powerslave said would work fine (just remember to turn volume on iPod to 0 before turning on)

you'll need a basic switch to turn 'remote' on to the amp and that's it.

You could add a switched, 50Kohm linear stereo pot to the dash, this would turn on the amp and give quicker control over the amplifier, even put a simple LED next to it to remind you the amp is on.

I don't know if you are interested in it but I use the Fusion Audio iPod dock head unit and it's excellent. The iPod docks internally into the unit, it has no CD or other media input (it does have an aux) and is hidden when the face is closed. It's just an iPod dock and a radio. The controls mimic the iPod click wheel and the screen displays what the iPod would display, except artwork. It's just like using an iPod, although the controls are easier to use than the click wheel is while you are driving because they are proper stereo knobs that you can get hold of. The iPod is powered up from the unit so there is no messing around with cabling it up, you just slip it into the dock and close the face. It's a good stereo IMHO, although it's not an area I know a lot about. The face connector is a little fragile when new but it settles down and works properly once it's been in use for a few weeks.

i wanted to do this too but mainly so i could have a head unit free dash as none of them really go with the 60s theme of my interior.

Beige.....that was awesome. I've seen those Arduino kits on Hackaday quite a bit but never thought of using one for that! Good work!

I personally would like to have independant control of the amp, setting the Ipod to 0 volume just for initial power up and setting the amp's gain control. (I'm used to working with PA amplifiers...and 1.5v is enough to drive full power, so always starting from 0 is a habit!)

PS i do like that display Kit on beige's mini, i'd be interested on more info.

i was going to do it by running the ipod into a grathic equaliser then to a amp as some if the incar graths i have seen are fare smaller n easyier to hide than a head unit but you can still control your levels easily from up front.
