Small hammer and a fairly good vice or similar with the anvil fixing on the back, lay the ball end of the trumpet on the anvil, then start tapping the area that the knuckle joint fits into, keep turning the trumpet whist tapping it and you'll see the knuckle start to move on its own. If you haven't got a vice or anvil then use something solid, an old scrap engine block or cylinder head will work. Don't batter it with the hammer just fairly light tapping, or the trumpet will crack.

do you mean the ball end of the trumpet is stuck in the suspension arm or the ball end wont come out of the trumpet like cambiker assumes you meanhave spent another evening trying to get the ball of the trumpet out of the upper suspension arm. the bugger just wont budge. getting bit frustrated now. any tips greatly appreciated

I'm guessing you mean getting the trumpet out of the top arm like below

thats still on the car as you mention front rubber cones in your title? In which case make sure the droop stop is already out

This will let the top arm drop a little more. When your compression tool has compressed the spring enough then you will need to lever out the trumpet using the bottom ball end, be careful as your trying to prise it out as when it pops out your knuckles will find the closet part of the bodywork to mate with!

do you mean that the trumpet is stuck in the tower and the ball wont separate? mine wouldnt no matter what i did. had to strop the top arm out of the tower to get mine out. then used the vice and a BIG mallet.

picture is spot on. ive compressed the spring and taken the stop out and it still wont budge.
cant get anything down the side of the ball enough to prise it out.
thanks for taking the time to put pictures on

Have you compressed the rubber cone sufficiently? With the cone properly compressed the trumpet should seem loose and will come out without prising. The cup is made of hard nylon, so it can't be corroded in. It is more usual to find the top of the trumpet stuck to the rubber cone.

ive got good clearance between trumpet and cone. just cant get the ball out of the topof the suspension arm. think im going to have to drop the arm out.
not really a prob as just seen tie rod is bent, so need new one of those, so now think I will strip whole thing down and give it a good load of tlc.
