On my car the test circuit lights up even when the spades are removed from the filler cap! Somethings not right...
Because it's not actually testing the brake fluid level, it's testing that the light actually works. You push the switch to see if the light comes on when needed to; ie. when your brake fluid level is low, not to test that you have sufficient brake fluid ... if you see what I mean.

Brake fluid level tester. A bit pointless really as when the fluid drops low enough for the switch to light up the brakes would be useless at stopping the car.
Rubbish, the switch lights up when the fluid drops to the low level marker and even then the brakes will work. That switch is designed to light up even when the car is parked up with the ignition off, so it's a warning should your Mini have lost it's brake fluid whilst parked up.
