Gearbox Number Identification

On removal of my gearbox today for my engine rebuild I noticed two sets of numbers. They look to have been indented using number stamps.

One was 59397, whichwas been crossed out and the new number 59749 has been put in its place.

Can anyone tell me what these number mean?

reconditioners mark/serial number

will mean very little unless you know who the reconditioner was...
