I'm building up my 1380 it's a different block but the original gear box and transfer case that I used with the last engine, this all worked fine with no problems, but I have been building it back up and when I checked my idler end float I get 10 thou.

so I have took it apart again, and my thrust washers are 133 and 136 so they aren't the thinnest of shims so why such a big end float? is it something more serious or should I just buy some thicker thrust washers and not be too worried about whay it did have such a large tolerance?

any advice please...... I need to have this engine in a running in 4 weeks

0.136" is not the thickest  0.139" is 0.003" thicker and a 0.134" thrust washer means that you have 0.006" clearance which is about central :) ie 0.004 to 0.007" "gap"

yes I know they are not the thickest they do, I was looking at getting this http://minispares.co...amp;title=IDLER GEAR SHIM .138/.139...

I would use that shim and and the 136 that I have, so that would be a 136 and a 138 by my calculations that would reduce end float by 5 thou

Question is, how did you check the end float ?

using a DTI and a lot of patience to make sure it wasnt giving a false reading by slipping off the teeth.

That just tells me how you got the number, does not tell me how you measured the endfloat..

by building up the gearbox and casing with a gasket and moving the gear side to side

So gearbox, gasket and transfer case, no engine block, transfer to gearbox bolts torqued up to 18lbft ?

so you could put a feeler gauge between the idler gear shim and the gearbox case if you wanted to ?

no I had the gear box on the engine as I had already built that up then rememberd the idler end float

the bolt's where all tourqued up and I have also removed it and refitted it with a diffrent gasket in case that was the problem, but with no luck.

I know it's not the preferd way of checking it but I have esured my mesurments were spot on.

I also am a little confused >_< how did you get the feeler gauge in to measure the clearance ? did you use the hole that the primary gear fits in to ?

He said he used a DTI, not a feeler gauge.

I would recheck the end float again. I don't see how you could get the DTI on the Idler gear correctly through the primary gear hole?
