    Starting My Mini Up

Hope someone can help me.

I have a mini one 57 reg which occasionally crunches when I put it into second gear (sounds like I don't have my foot on the clutch fully). It happens very infrequently and only when changing from first to second. I have taken it into the main dealer and they think the clutch is going. They have told me that if this is the case it is going to cost nearly £600 to replace the clutch (plus labour) as it is not covered under warranty. I am not a mechanic and know very little about cars, but surely if it was a clutch problem wouldn't it cause trouble with all the gears all the time?

My mini was recalled soon after I bought it because according to mini "stress corrosion may cause the retaining ring of the gear lever on the shifting unit to break. The gear lever slips out of its guide in the shifting unit on the gearbox". Is it just a coincidence that I now appear to be having trouble with the gear box?

I am really frustrated as I think the dealership is having me on here. I have been driving for nearly 30 years and have owned minis for 6 years. Not once have I burnt out a clutch. I don't drive with my foot resting on it and don't hammer it either.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid I can't help you with the gearbox issue ( wrong sort I'm afraid ) but £600 + parts for a clutch change is taking the biscuit... even for a main dealer...

Find a local independent and see what they say, preferably one recommended by a friend.
