what size is the hub nut (the nut with the pin holding it in place) for both the mini's above?

For the early car, the front hub nuts are either 1 & 1/8" or 28mm. For the late car they are either 1 & 5/16" or 34mm. That doesn't mean that the sockets are interchangeable on the nuts, it means that both metric and imperial nuts are avilable for the front hubs (all are imperial threaded) and either one socket or the other is correct for each car. There is no easy way to tell whether your car has metric or imperial nuts, any Mini could have either. Although it may be that when new the nuts are slightly different colours, when old though that is hard to spot.
I can't think of the size of rear hub nuts but always remember they are handed.

Not necessarily - this is only true if he is asking about the front hub on a disk braked car.
As GuessWorks said - it depends if we are talking front or rear and disk or drum.
