the "Mini Special" was a 1979 edition, available in silver or bronze (rose metallic) with a vinyl roof and an 1100cc engine...

I think yours just has a badge stuck on the boot ;)

That is if I understood your term vinyl corretcly

a vinyl can be a matrial type roof

or a sticker type thingy.

I understood It as material roof

Hang on a minute, the 1100 special of 1979 was called the Mini 1100 Special and had a vinyl roof, alloy wheels, centre console and other special trim. Before this there was the Mini 1000 Special Edition, just called the Mini Special, in 1975 / '76. This car wouldn't seem special now but it was pretty much the first special edition car sold in the UK and had a lot of features that were introduced for that model but soon became standard. As such at the time it was very special indeed. It was the first Mini shaped Mini saloon with twin air vents for example. It had hideous orange velour trim from the MGB. It had gold coachlines. It had twin chrome door mirrors. It had reclining seats. These were all new for a basic model car.

Does the badge say 'Mini' on a black background and then 'Special' on a gold background? That's a Mini Special badge.

Your car does not have a vinyl roof. A vinyl roof is a roof completey wrapped in vinyl cloth, it doesn't open. Think of '70s and '80s cars, a vinyl roof was a big thing then.

I just noticed you are in South Africa. Mini Special was not sold outside the UK. There may have been some other special editions that were unique to your market. And I just noticed the photos (wasn't logged in before). That's not a UK Mini Special badge.

side light, I suspect local regulations required the side light to be separate from the main dipped beam...

Here's a thought... maybe it was one of the first police interceptor units, and it actually had blue flashing lights ;)

South African minis were never built with 1000, (998cc), engines.

The base engine was the 1100, (1098cc), which was fitted to the round front 'De Luxe' and the Clubman.

The only other engine used was the 1275 which was only fitted to the 'GTS' and the '1275E' which were both Clubmans.

Like said before, I think that the badge is not original. I would say that your mini is a 'De Luxe'

Also a strange South African variation was a round nose mini front mated to an Elf/Hornet rear, not sure what this was called though.
