Model: Cooper
Year: 1994
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Front n/s wheel bearing is completely knackered. It got so bad that as I was driving along it was making terrible scraping noises, and tugs the steering to the left. Anyway, I'm trying to get the hub off so I can replace it but it refuses to come off the shaft. I'm guessing that the wheel bearing is either a mangled mess inside or the inner race has welded itself to the shaft with heat. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the hub off? Without the aid of a hub puller. I've tried a few things, like putting the hub nut on and smiting the nut, and smiting the inner race of the bearing via one of those ball joint splitters where you hammer them. I have slotted the ball joints into the top and bottom arms to stop the hub dangling, but still no joy.
Cheers,
Ben.

Split the CV and get it on the bench, easier to work with then...
by the sounds of it, you'll be needing a new CV anyway.

Get a piece of wood and put it on the end of the cv joint shaft and whack with a mallet...that should free it up
i had to with mine earlier this year

I was hoping I wouldn't need a new CV joint - I've only just done the other side...

u wont need to...it wont damage if you put a bit if 2x2 wood over it and give it some "gentle" whacks

as above, using a bit of wood and a club hammer - with both ball joints still located (or you will be hitting a moving target) "persuade" the joint to move; once the joint starts to move, pop the ball joints, and while holding the hub, tap the cv out.
had this with my drivers cv, was rusted to the bearing but i cleaned and copper slipped it up before re-assembly and it basically fell off when i fitted my 4 pot flanges.
most things on a mini can so sorted with a 13mm / half inch spanner, club hammer, plane screwdriver and a bit of wood!

Got the joint off eventually. The worst bit was getting the hub off the CV joint, the wheel bearing had fused to it with heat... when it came off the rollers in the bearing were completely mashed, most of them worn flat. All done now, and I can still hear another wheel bearing droning...
