In answer to your question, yes, they're easy to fit. The kits come with everything you need (wires for the ballasts connect to your existing headlight wiring and a multi-plug connects the ballast to the burner).. HOWEVER, fitting them to a reflective headlight (such as the Mini) will fail an MOT and IMO, are a royal PITA as the reflector and glass pattern simply cannot control the light emitted by the HID burner and WILL blind both oncoming drivers and people you're following. In short, please don't fit them to any headlights that don't use a projector.

The burners in the E30 sit behind the projector lens (the silver backing is pretty much just for show).. the burners in the link sheddd posted, just sit behind the glass and therefore, IMO, will just spray the light all over the place. I'd _love_ to fit a HID kit to our Mini.. but have had to settle with standard H4 bulbs.
You can get H4 'bi-xenon' kits that have both dipped and main within the same burner IIRC.. but apart from the lack of a projector lens in both a standard Mini headlamp and the ones linked above, the car is also supposed to have adjustable headlight height control and factory fitted wash-wipe too.

Maybe something like these would be better replacements? It's the company I ordered my E30 HID kit from and got speedy service from them.
I installed some Halfords "Super Brilliant Blue" bulbs (which are more white than blue, which suits me) in our Mini which compared to the original candles that were in there, are sweet as. Not as good as HIDs, but at least I can see at night with them
