I've been trying to time my camshaft in and have become a little confused!!

im trying to figure out which way to go for allowing the chain stretch...so for example

If i've been told 108 is perfect...then to take into account of stretch (im going to do 1 degree out) should i be looking for:

109 or 107

If anyone has any answers for this, it would help me out alot!!

The chain stretches more than 1 degree, time it at 106.

What cam is it?

The manual says time it anywhere between 106 to 108

Good, Swifty would confirm what I said.
I check my timing after every event and the chain always stretches 1.5 degrees after only about 10 miles from new

Hahaha, oddly enough hopefully going to be timing in my cam today! its an SW-10 so runs on the same timing principals of the SW5..
the sheet of paper says 106 to 108, so call that 107..
then take in the 2 degrees for stretch
so im going to be timing it at 105 to make sure the timing will be dead on, after running in time!
hope that helps!

Its best to recheck the timing after running in - before going to the rolling road. Its very easy to do in the car

Yer that's probably a wise move there paul! its even easier if you have a vernier set, the adjustment can be made so quickly with little fuss!

Just done mine, ended up timing her in at 106 technically 105.75, so that should be fine!

I think if its backwards itll drag on the chain, it should only fit one way comfortably so the outer edge is further outwards - if that makes sense

Paul, I think it goes with the step on the face inwards and it just clears the chain. That's how I always fit mine.
As for cam timing/chain stretch, you are absolutely correct about initial chain stretch. The chain stretches a lot, approx 1 deg to 1.5 deg, during the first few miles, say 10 miles to 100 miles, then the stretch settles down and only stretches that much again in the next 10,000 miles or so. I always set to 2 deg to 3 deg advanced to allow for this.
Yes, as the measurement is ATDC, you subtract the allowance from the cam manufacturer's nominal setting to get your best initial setting.
