Looks like HIC (Herts Insurance) has let me down. I now live in the USA but get back to the UK from time to time. When I moved to the USA last year we had to leave my wife’s 1997 John Cooper Sport5 on UK soil. V5 says my father-in-law is now the proud owner… but really it’s still ours  i.e. we get to play with it when we’re back “home” on vacation.

Father-in-law just went to renew the insurance with Herts – and asked about putting me on the policy. They say they can’t do that as I am not a UK resident. Strange ‘because they were more than happy to put me on temporarily when I last visited here in June… and I made them aware that I was a US resident. Hmmm...

So, does anyone know if this is general rule that all UK insurance companies now enforce, or are there any companies that would allow me to drive my father-in-law’s Mini (either permanently or temporarily on the policy)?

Cheers,
Colin.

Yes, they're correct.

If you live in another country, you can't be insured on a car in the UK, unless its temporary cover for the time you're on holiday here.

I can't explaing the exact details, but my aunt has the same problem (She lives in Utah).

You won't have any problems getting insured short term whilst you're actually in the country, but as soon as you step outside the UK borders, the insurance isn't valid. It's something to do with the jurisdiction of companies and insurance regulators across national boundaries.

Funnily enough I remember my dad putting my Sisters EX husband (cheating b'stard!) on his policy when they came over, and there was no charge. And he's a US citizen.
