hi

we're possibly moving to newzealand soon and i wanted to bring my mini, its a 1991 mini city e and we've done some reaserch and if its 20 years old or more then it would be exepmt from all the impact rules of importation, but mine is 1 year out?

is there anyway round it? how can i get my mini out there and get it past all these laws?

and advice?

thanks

nick

when you thinking of going  your mini will probably be 20 years old by then just wait the extra months untill it is 20 years old, unless it's pre 1991 or what ever, most cars that go to the USA that are not old enough carry the identity of a older car, that's how you get a 60s MPI mini out there haha, obviously it's not legit

i dont understand the problem. is because its new you would have to pay tax on it? or is it just illegal to do so?
people ship brand new cars across the world.
is the whole issue just a tax thing? or are you not allowed to do it?

It might be worth checking what date they measure the 20 years from. Most cars are manufactured some time before they are registered. You may find that your mini is already 20 years old even though it's only been registered for road use for 19.

So long as you can prove you have owned the vehicle overseas for more than 6 months it will not need to comply with the new frontal impact laws but will be certified and vinned based on the laws of when the car was built.
I have a friend whom inports american cars and this is how he gets them through, justbuys them in the states and keeps them registred in his name for 6 months

ok thankyou:)

another interesting point, i crashed it a few months back, and i've never really been happy with the repaired shell.

what i was wondering is are there many minis in nz? or can you buy shells out there as i could strip my mini here and bring all my bits in the container.

thanks

nick

Hi Nick, this site should get you started as to what you'll need to do regarding bringing your Mini with you.
The site is a bit of a PITA to find stuff sometimes but you should garner some good info'.

There ARE plenty of Minis here BUT alot are rotten and the ones that aren't are quite dear.
Have a quick browse here.

The problem with bringing a car in with previous accident damage, when the car gets inspected to get VIN and registration they will tear your car apart to inspect the repairs and it can get costly and become a headache.
Yes there are plenty of Minis out here. Parts are plentiful, even new parts are readily available from outfits that bring new stock in from the UK.

If you have any other questions just let us know mate.

haha:P

ok thankyouu:)

you know how you said its a pain bringing a car with accident damage, i never claimed on my insurance, so technically my car hasnt been crashed, and also i dont think anyone can actually tell because i could just blame the cracked paint on bad filler ect:P

bellicose, whats the roads like out there:)?

thanks

hi guys:)

im definatly coming:)

so i have some thoughts which i'd love some opinions on:)

i have two options,

1- sell my mini , i think shes worth about £3500 ish, maybe abit more, bring the cash to newzealand and buy a mini out there and rebuild that one (which id quite like to do)

2- ship my mini outhere, which at the moment is looking seriously hard work, its a year to young and it caught by alot of new laws, and theres alot of paper work and documents that need to be got:/

any idea's:/?

thanks
