as it says in the topic title i have a beam axle which i believe is a jonspeed one, and as soon as i fitted it (about a month ago) i noticed that the hand brake quadrants run very close over the top of the solid steel cross members that run along the bottom (the solid ones about 12mmx12mm, not the actual box section of the main structure) i took the car in for the mot and they said it was ok as it didnt actually foul on it and it did not restrict the movement of the quads.

my question is, has anyone else found this same problem?

i cannot see a way of rectifying this other than removing the radius arms and machining back the raised section of the arms that the quads swivle on top of, so as to effectivly move them up, closer under the arms, and away from the beam axle.

personally i feel it may be a design fault in the beam axle as the angles that are bent into the cross members are of the wrong angle and in the wrong place.

i have added a pic of an identical beam, that i found on google, it is a pic someone posted on here a while back actually, i hope you can see the area i mean that the quads are very close to when the arms are fitted?

I had the shuddersfield one which looks exactly the same and i had no problems with the handbrake. Problems i did have included:

the lump on the radius arm where the knuckle joint went it hit on the beam before the coilover ran out of travel. Ended up cutting the offending bit of metal off the radius arm.

the bracket on the beam that holds one end of the radius arm and flexible pipe, the end had to be bent so that the pipe wasn't fouling on the radius arms.

hmmm, interesting, i know what you mean about the lump where the knuckle joint used to go, i had to cut that off too, but i didnt have a problem with the bracket as you have described. are the handbrake quads even close to the frame on yours then?

The bracket on mine was straight and i had to bend the end of it where the pipe is held on, so that the rigid part of the join on end of pipe cleared the radius arm, if you look at a proper subframe this part is angled on them as well for the same reason.

The handbrake quadrants had a minimum of 5mm clearance through out the whole travel of the damper body of the coilovers.

Have you fitted the coilover body without the spring to check everything is ok throughout the travel? i had standard height coilovers and mine was fine.

mine are lowered height as it is bloody low, but i have checked what happens without the coilover on and moved the arm up and down and i cant see whats making it pop into this position, i even had the car on the ramps today to have a look? it didnt do it before i swapped the arms though? who knows eh! its a mystery lol
