I got my new mini project today, its a 1972 clubman fitted with a 1275 A series with the old style starter (starter solenoid is attached to inner wing not the starter motor itself). The mini never came with the speedo or clocks attached and someone said that it mightnt start with them not fitted. Is this true?

If so does anyone know what wires to link together on the speedo plug to get it to start? i couldnt try starting it tonight as the battery was dead but will try tomorrow.

i guess it should! the speedo is ran from a cable is it??

It will start without a speedo cable, mine doesnt have one attatched ever as i run a digital speedo

Utter tosh. Yes it will start. Turn on the ignition to get 12 volt to the coil. Turn it over, the solenoid will click and turn the starter and the coil will fire 12volts (ish) to the distributor, the distributor will then open and close the points (unless electronic) and send a spark to the spark plugs and the engine will run. If that don't happen, it's a fault with one of the above. Come back and tell us what did(n't) happen and we'll try to narrow it down for you.

It's a 1972 mini, your lucky it even has electricity. Haha

It could also be fueling or compression... But yea if you give up more details of why its not starting we will be able to help more

Yes your right. That was a general overview. If all of the above happened then WE could have suggested where next.....fueling or compression maybe. Sorry Tom just taking the pish mate.

Ok thanks. Ive not tried to start it yet but thought id ask before i tried tomorrow just incase there was something.

ill post tomorrow if it doesnt start. I was told its burning oil so it will need a rebuild but would like to get it running before i strip it just to see if it runs smoothly or if it has any obvious problems.

Tried to start the engine today but i couldnt get it to start.
I think it may be a problem with the coil as i dont seem to be getting a spark. Ive tried 2 coils but they both havent been used in about year. I am getting 12v across the + and - terminals. Trying to follow haynes guide for checking the coil i was getting about 1.4 and 2.4 ohms across the + and - terminals on the 2 coils which is higher than its given limits (0.4-0.9 ohms).

It also says to get a reading between the ht terminal and the coil +. I take it the HT terminal is where the ht lead plugs into the coil? i am not getting a reading across this and getting no continuity across them at all would this be the problem? ALso when i was cranking the engine i had my multimeter in the ht plug on the coil and was not getting any voltage out of it, i take it i should be?

Would anything else be causing the coil to not operate correctly?

From what i was reading the other day, there was some speculation as to wether or not the lil red charge indicator light thingy on the dash needs to be working ok or not for things to work. So if you mean you have no dials at all (inc no charge indicator light) this may be the problemo. Allthough like i say, this is just something i was reading on here the other day... hopefully someone more helpfull will come along soon lol

Ok thanks for that, if thats true it would tie in with what the guy told me yesterday. Ill try look at wiring diagrams and see if i can make anything of it.
