Hi- I"Believe" my mni is running too hot. On the run up to ACE last night the temp guage was burried in the red for 2/3 of the trip up. Granted, despite our best efforts to beat rush hour,we didnt. We sat in traffic for about an hour or so.Even when we broke free from congestion and I was able to get up to good speed for considerable distance she never strayed from the red!

My guess is..perhaps the temp guage is wrong? No overheat steam fron under the bonnet as tomsbluemini was in front and rosewhite was looking from their car to see if the overflow was leaking out...nothing. I have replaced the thermostat, thermostat housing, water pump ,and the all hoses and she is not loosing coolant anywhere. No water in the oil showing signs of head gasket issues...so what is the likely culprit?

On shorter drives to and from work, about 7 miles she's just fine temp guage wise...any Idea's? I know mini's run hot anyway but this seems a bit extreme. What should the water temp be on a warmed up 998 anyway? Just curious.
Thanks for any help,I appreciate it.-Andy

Model: city
Year:1987
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):see above

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?none!

Hi, I've just been through a spate of over heating with my Elf.

First thing to check is if the fan is on the right way round, blades have a curve in them, the tips of the curve should face the rad.

In my case I replaced everything, h/gasket/w/pump etc

It turned out to be the rad

If you are overheating you should cheack the following list.

Overheating

1. Inoperative thermostat 1. Replace thermostat
2. Radiator fin choked with mud, leaves etc. 2. Clean out air passage.
3. Incorrect ignition and valve timing 3. Tune engine.
4. Dirty oil and sludge in engine 4. Change engine oil and filter.
5. Inoperative water pump 5. Replace (or check-electrical).
6. Loose fan belt 6. Adjust tension.
7. Restricted radiator 7. Flush radiator.
8. Inaccurate temperature gauge 8. Replace temperature gauge
9. Impurity in water. 9. Use soft, clean water.

Sounds to me like your sender is breaking down when it gets hotter than usual. Try a new one obviously.

Should run at the same temp as your stat - usually 88 deg

Is it a capillary gauge or Electrical one?

It's the standard guage thats in the speedo cluster with the fuel guage. I assume capillary?

Well I'm never sure, but you may have a removable voltage regulator attached to the rear of the clocks, or you may not. Basically Rover stopped fitting Smiths Instruments to Minis during 1985 and switched to Nippon Seiki instead.

Nippon Seiki instruments generally don't have removable voltage regulators as regulating is done within the gauges themselves, electronically?

So it could be the sender on the cylinder head, or it could be that the printed circuit (PCB) or instruments have got wet due to the British weather?

Try the sender first, if that doesn't work, then try removing and drying your instruments.

Just don't yank the fascia off the pod, there is a correct way to do it: -
