Ok guys, just a quickie.

I've just bought this rear subframe on Ebay as a first step to rebuilding my Mk2 'S'.
Question is...is this a pre-1976 or post-1976 subframe?
I need to know so I know what bush/mounting kit to buy from the usual sources.

See, that wasn't too hard, was it ? >_<

I thought they changed in 1984 - pre 1984 = no exhaust hangers, post 1984 = exhaust hangers, so it looks like thats an earlier one like mine :teehee:

I just bought this:

Thanks,

Apparently in 1976 the rear subframe changed to a large single bush on the front mounting, with the small split bushes kept on the rear mounting.
(whatever that means).....

Ah yes, if you check minisport there is an early or late model kit for poly bushes, mines a mark 3 (1982) and has the large bushes all round, I think mark 1 and 2 had the large and small mix

I'm interested in this as well because I'm looking for a rear subby for my Mk2 (going dry)

I thought the dry rear subbys were similar until '91 where they had bits for the exhaust added (hangers). Although I have heard about the change you mention in '76

I know you can buy a early bolt and bush kit from Minispares

Linky...

So maybe you could buy that set to fit the rear subframe as it were pre '76?

Does anyone know if this kit can be used on the new non gen rear subframes which are the pre '91 spec?

I think if you use the old trunnions from the subframe which came off the car you should be okay?!

Edit a bit of research on Minispares

This seems to be the pre '76 trunnion which holds the two bushes

Posted Image

and this one the '76 onwards which as you can see has a larger hole for a bigger bush and is strenghened

I think you could use either trunnion if you have the right bushes to go with it

I think I may have answered some of my own questions here >_<

i bought a new subframe as mine was totally rotten and before i new that there were different bushes i bought a kit of bushes that turned out to be the wrong one for my car. so as i didn't want to have to fork out for new bushes i made new trunions to fit the bushes so yes you can fit the newer type even if your car is a pre 76 but the subframes are the same its just the trunions and the bushes that are different

hope this helps

Sorry for hijacking your thread

Would the early pre '76 mounting have this trunnion on both the boot floor and the mount to the heelboard?

Mine has the one like above to the boot floor and one like the one below to the heelboard, not sure if it is different and holding the split bushes instead of a single one

Okayyyyyyyyyyyy............ :(

So.

To get back on track a little.....

I take it then that mine (see pic) has the more modern, larger (and therefore post-'76) mount ??

I think you need to post up some close-ups of the trunnion mounts!

Well, I only just bought it and it's not in-country yet!

But it appears to have two larger "square" trunnions, and two "stepped" trunnions.

I think that the stepped ones are the older ones, and the older subframes would have four of these - but that they were replaced with the larger ones in post-76 subframes. That's my working hypothesis, anyway......

Padraig - yes your subframe has the later post '76 trunnions.

GreaseMonkey - Yes a pre-'76 car should have four of the smaller trunnions all using the split bushes. Post '76 have two large trunnions at the front using a single bush and two smaller trunnions at the rear with the split bush.

The trunnions are interchangeable - just use the correct bushes to suit.

JR You are a Star! :(

I knew I'd get an unequivocal, definitive answer at some point.
(I guess it's because you're old enough to remember pre-76 cars, is that it?)
