Hi, i have just picked up a cheapish mini with a splash of mot left, but it needs a new head and generally putting back together. The one possible stumbling block i have is the distributor, it appears to be a lucas body but has been ground up and polished so no visible marks are left. There is a vacuum unit which is not attached to anything, and under the cap is a rotor arm, and a red THING!!!! Hopefully you already know what it is i have, but the red thinghas a radiused inner edge to mirror the rotor arm, there are 2 wires coming out of the dizzy, one black wire with spade connector, and a longer red wire which must go off to ?????????????????????... Should i have some sort of gadget in the engine bay for this dizzy??? the other piece of info that may help in id ing the dizzy, is on the clutch housing there are 2 holes, one is lined up directly with the teeth on the flywheel, the other is towards the engine slightly, both holes are not threaded, just 2 holes approx size 13mm, any ideas as to whether i can use this dizzy greatly appreciated, otherwise it looks like ebay time for me!!!, thanks
Distributor Id Please

What you are describing with the red thing is an after market electronic ignition unit. Inside a standard lucas dizzy
The red wire should go to an ignition fed 12v supply or if the car is non ballast it will go to the coil positive.
The black wire will go to the coil negative.
The vacuum unit should really be attached via a small tube to the carb.
Pictures of it all would help.
