Hi guys, just come back from holiday, went to nip the idle up a little on the car today when i went for a drive and noticed this stuff coming out of the front of the engine that i'm sure wasn't there before. It's a 1275cc block.

Strange colour, and i'm sure the engine is supposed to be sealed here right? Should i be worrying about it? Need to know what i should do before i order a load of bits for the engine, otherwise i'll dump this one and buy a new engine.

that's a core plug. it is relatively easy to change but you will have to drain the coolant to do it

Ok, so how do i change it? I need to drain the coolant anyway as i'm putting a new water pump in.

I'm guessing i need that? Is there more than one? As i'll do them all at the same time otherwise.

Cheers

I know this is going to sound rough !! Tap somthing sharp into and through the plug, then lever it out. An old screwdriver is what I'd use, the weakest bit of the plug will be the bit where the leak is, if you give it a scrape you'll probably be able to get it to leak even more. Clean the block with some fine emery and coat the side with Red Hermetite before you fit the new coreplug. Tap it in till it's flush, use a socket that's a good fit inside the resess, there's less chance of distorting the edge. If the old one goes into the block instead of coming out it dos'nt matter, there's only water in there and nothing for it to damage .

Surly you would have to get it out if it goes into the block or it will block the waterways even if there is nothing to damage? :P

OK thanks for the info. I'll order those as well as all the other stuff i have to do.

I'm guessing there's some at the back of the engine then? I can't be bothered to do them, is there 3 on the front? I'll just do however many is on the front, or shall i just do the 1 and buy some spares in case another one starts leaking?

Thanks again,
Stef

3 on the front and 2 on the drivers side of the engine. Should be easy enough to change them with the steady removed. I'd do them all while I have the chance!

Ah ok fair enough, changing the bushes in the steadies to poly anyway so will need them out.

Yet another job to do! Cheers for all the info guys, best load up my minispares basket tonight.
