commonly called a helicoil...
Silly question, but has the garage just performed a service on your car, and was it leaking oil from the sump plug before they did it ???
and surprised the garage did not sort it anyway... but you should be able to get one from any good motor factors.

do you need to take the gearbox out to do it?

Nope, can be done in car, you need to retap the hole to a bigger size and then the helicoil is inserted which is like a spring, and then the sumpplug is screwed into the helicoil...
or on one of my old boxes, just put a bigger sump-plug in...

Wouldn't retapping the hole mean that you would get shards of metal in the box, which would mean you would need the box off to get out?

Guess Works, nope they didnt do a service i have 4 new vaules done i was only running on 2 Cylinders . he told me to drive round for a couple miles didnt say how many, took it back for it's tuneup and oil change and then he told me that it is f***ed.
I rang up all the good car companys around here and cant get it at all. Just rang up another garage that he told me to try and they will do it for me goign to cost me £50 plus vat

it may be an option, but if there's no thread then maybe not...

No thread would indicate a monkey with a spanner at the garage?

No thread can just mean well serviced. Oil change every 3000 miles means four times a year for most of us, a steel sump plug screwed into soft alloy gearbox and tightened to 35lb (I think that's what it says in the book) several times a year means serious wear on the thread, that's why tapered plugs and helicoil kits are commonoly available.
