I paid £15 for mine at Bingley. Probably similar price at other shows if they are there.

Hi

How good is this DVD "ULTIMATE MINI BUILDER DVD - 100BHP 1380 A-SERIES BUILD"? I have basic mechanical knowledge but I have not build an entire engine from scratch. Would this DVD be of any help?

Cheers

Syed

Looks like I'm going to be the one to slightly put the dampers on it. I would say yes a very useful"guide". The gearbox part was the most useful to me.I fealt that too many things were missing to actually know why the engine achieved the result and it wasnt aimed at the grass roots enthusiast. Certainly if you can afford to build to that spec you can afford the dvd. The biggest oversight was of the head.I expected him to be in there with his die grinder and chamber template and explaining why,but he just went and bought the most important item to get his 100 hp.The time spent refurbing a standard head should have been used on modifying one,we are building a non standard engine after all.We dont even know what size valves were fitted or the exhaust spec. The flywheel miraculously came off at some point!!Omega pistons are unaffordable too for alot of folk.I dont know how many hp a fan uses but it wasnt on.Did he re-profile a needle or was he lucky to just hit on one.Could be just me but I found myself asking as many questions as were answered.Havent watched it for 3 or 4 months but I'm now going to again to make sure I havent wrongly commented or overlooked any more gripes!.

The Dvds is fine, As a total novice it was a good intro for me!

Watching it on dvd was great as i hate reading books (do it for a living).

Its only 15 quid (or around) and it is over 3 hours of entertainment; especially watching the awkwardness of ian stent the presenter. who never actually listens to anything that is being said.

Just finished watching this myself. Bought it on ebay but came from Minifilms

Its a very informative vid on a complete engine build, makes me wish i had a garage of the same size and was stocked with the same tools

Made me cringe a bit where the lad at swifttune was performing a bit of precision tuning on the timing, smack the dizzy with a hammer and a big screwdriver and shout out a number ! .. thank god for Megajolt is all i can say

I am going to buy the DVD, as I want to have a look at the step by step building guide which I feel is invaluable. But, in the mean time I am really interested in knowing the full spec of the engine thats recommended. Would someone mind PM'ing me the full build spec please? I promise I am going to buy the DVD! I just want to have a snoop in the meantime! Ta

Some of the stuff such as the head for instance is quite vague but the general spec is as follows.

1275 Metro block offset bored to 1380
SW5 Cam
1.5 roller rockers
New cam followers
Richard longman head .. this was the vague bit but i guess the usual skimmed/ported/polished 12G940
73.5mm Omega 7cc Dished pistons
Added steel center main strap
Reground 10.10, balanced and tuftrided crank
Rebuilt clutch with lightened fly and orange diaphragm
Uprated water/oil pump
Rebuilt HIF44
Alloy inlet
Kent cams duplex vernier timing gears
ARP bolts/studs

The gearbox was rebuilt but the only new things were a few shims/gaskets and a new diff pin.

Let me know if i missed anything and ill let you know.

Ive watched this DVD, and it is good and in-depth. But treat it like a pinch of salt. There are some practices used which are questionable. Thats what ive found after watching it anyway. Paying particular attention to the gearbox and tolerences IIRC. Other than that if your not a haynes/book person its worth it.

I would watch the dvd and also have the haynes manual (pale blue one) next to you when building :).

The DVD is quite helpful if you haven't built a modified engine before, but make sure you don't break the transfer case when taking the old flywheel off like Bill Sollis does. :xmas:

The main things to take away from the film is to keep everything clean, measure every component before fitting and to get it set up by someone who knows what they are doing. I set my 1380 up using the ignition timing that came with my Aldon dizzy and jetting for the 45 Weber from my old more mildly tuned 1380. Peter Baldwin managed to find another 24hp in the engine which makes the £140 I spent on two hours at his rolling road the most cost effective part of the tuning process.

Here's the spec that Minifilms e-mailed out not long after I ordered the DVD from their website:-
