K, I'm looking to change the colour of my wheel arches to purple (will match the colour scheme of my car) I had planned to spray them, how ever I read somewhere today that it's really hard and would be better to get them powdercoated!

Anyone got any tips either on spraying alloys? or anyone know of anywhere that powdercoats? and costs?

Am going to ring the local mini garage in the morn jus thought I'd see if anyone can give me any advice?

Cheers, sian

heres a link to a few people who do powder coating in nottingham.

I got a quote from a company close to me to do 5 steel wheels (wellers) in white, and they started at £250, and eventually they came out with £175, so if your on a budget painting is probably better.
Also with painting the colour will be a perfect match (unless your going for a total different colour)

Thats a good point....I am looking for a perfect match!
Cheers for the link! Might give a couple of them a call!
Does anyone know if the appearence will be different between the two finishes? Has anyone got any pictures of alloys that have been sprayed/powder coated?

Cheers!

Im not sure if they can mix the powder like you can mix paint, so the main difference would be in colour.
The look/texture of powder coating shouldn't be much if any different from the paint finish.

powder coating is expensive, and you will find it hard to match the colour. if the alloys aren't badly damaged ie. kirbed or full of coorosion, spraying is the most cost effective way. plus you can then get a perfect match to the paint work on your car!

Here are my multispoke alloys which I sprayed in Matt Black myself. It was a very easy job and the finish is perfect! I'd definately recommend spraying yourself.

I'd definately recommend spraying yourself.

...I meant "spray-painting the wheels yourself", not "spraying paint onto yourself", by the way!

...just to clarify!

Haha!! no sorry, they are for my brother's Fiat Punto! But I want them on my mini too!! ...and Guido is my name... don't mock my Italian heritage! :P

Ok, well I actually did these wheels with my brother...so there may be teeny bits I leave out!! :)

First, you have to use some filler to patch up any holes or scratches. Remember, 95% of the result is preparation! You then sand it down to a nice smooth finish, so that you cannot feel any indents or scratches when you run your finger over the wheel. I would advise that you spend as long as it takes to get a perfect finish here, because the next part's easy! :cheese:

Next, I just sprayed a thin coat of primer, waited till it dried, then sprayed another thin coat. (Because you're spraying the whole wheel, you dont have to mask off anything!) When that dried, i sanded it evenly and lightly with a very fine sandpaper. This was just to make sure it was really smooth all over.

Then you just spray them any colour you like (I used Halfords paint), but do NOT do a couple of thick coats! The paint may start to run this way! Spray a few light, even coats, with the can not too close to the wheel. Remember to wait until the previous coat is dry before starting the next one.

When you have a well-painted wheel, I sprayed a few thin, even coats of lacquer (Halfords, satin finish). When that's dry, the job is done!!

Hope this helped! (I think this is how other people spray them too! :) )

Guido.
