hi guys is it a legal requirement to have a reverse gear when installing the r1 engine?

also how has anyone got around with not having one - is it a pain in the arse or not so bad.

cheers

I'm not 100% sure on an MOT of a normal car but for an SVA on a kit car you don't need a reverse gear. There are plenty of bike engined kit cars without reverse. I would assume, having passed an SVA to be on the road in the first place, that you would not need reverse for the subsequent MOTs.

Most bike engined kit cars can get away without reverse because they're so light so the driver can just get out and push it backwards. But for people who want reverse, an electric motor is used. I think it's normally a starter motor off an engine.

This is one requirement that will change when SVA becomes IVA. I don't think it will be long before it's an age related requirement for MOT also but at the moment you are safe without

You don't need a brake light?

I did MOT's on bikes for many years untill 6 months ago and with a bike if you have a brake light you need all lights.
For a day time MOT you can have NO lights seems a bit mad but thats how it is.

I have the reverse on my R1 but the noise it makes sounds like your continually crunching gears, so not the nicest thing to use, i just get out and push, makes things a bit more fun!

Have you checked the mesh on the gear? Mine sounded like a tram but no crunching.
