I hear that from my mate (Jap Imports UK) all 2-Pack and 2K paints are being phased out for water based solutions.

Next week sometime, they will be spraying Redlines 800bhp skyline in a sky blue using these paints. Apparantly they are alot easier to work with and being waterbased it levels itself alot better and provides a neat job.

I'll see about snagging a couple of pics of the skyline sometime :w00t:

yep, they started 2 years ago, by this time in two years there is no 2pac to be sold or used in the motor trade! water based isn't toxic, it's what it says "WATER" based! they use dye pigments to get the colour. it's realy easy to use, thats all we use in work now, but if you chip the laquer and water gets behind it, it washes the base coat out and you are left with a bare panel. so there are down sides to this!

if your using 2pac, make sure you wear gloves and a fine particle dust mask, spray in a well ventilated area and if you feel dizzy stop and take a 10 minute break. water based paint is very hard to use at home, unless you have a garage with a proper extaction system and a heater to keep the area at a constant temperature, it will be near impossible to use water based paint at home.

For all the hassle it causes I say its a better idea to do all the prep yourself and then just have a bodyshop do the topcoat for a coupla hundred quid!

for the time celly is your only choice, most body shops don't mind you prepping your own car (some like it, but they are lazy  like me) it is a good idea to do it your self, it saves time in the body shop and you have a cheeper bill at the end!

Did someone say that waterbased paints run if the laquer chips?

I did some talking and waterbased does not chip once dried and can be sprayed at home. Although it will dry slower than 2K it will still go off, but a bit of pursuasion with heat wouldnt go amiss.

with water based paint, you have to put a clear coat over the top, if you chip the clear coat and water gets behind it, it can cause the base coat to fade as the pigment is seperated from the panel. it happens rarely, but when it does it is a pain to put right! you can paint water based at home but it is very very very very very hard as you have got to keep the temp the same and fully dry the base coat before the clear coat, naturaly drying water based could take a while, in that time the panel could get covered in dust and the paint job ruined.
