Hey everybody, I hope somebody can answer a few of my questions!!

Does anybody out there have insurance for their project cars? My full rebuild is nearing completion, however I am going abroad for a while on work and won’t be able to get the car finished for a year or two. As the car stands, I have invested a fair few grand on it and am a little worried about the possibility that some "good for nothing" breaks into my garage and has it away. The car has been SORN for 4 years and has no engine at the moment so I'm guessing that normal car insure cant apply? Right? I haven’t had a word with my household insurance broker yet but maybe you people know if it would fall under that, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t because when enquiring about insurance for my MX bike that I was told it hand an engine so couldn’t fall under house insurance. Then again my mini hasn’t got an engine so.....

If there are insurance companies that do cover projects cars, would you be so kind as to tell me! And if you know a ball park figure of what the premiums are?

Sorry if the above is very vague but I would appreciate any info

Regards

Andy

try some of the classic car specialists, i think some of them do project cover, whilst its in your garage, i remember reading in paracticle classic's one of the chaps there had his car isured and the garage was tourched, luckily the insurance paid out which has allowed him to replace the car.. still try pohoning them up and having a word rather than the internet, theres less chance of them misselling you the insurance you require :D good luck

I think HIC and Adrian Flux do it as well.

Edit: Re Guessworks' post below - I got 3 quotes in November of £40-60 and car had to be garaged.

I did this a few years ago. Think it cost me about £10 for the year through Norwich Union ( but it needed to be in a secure garage or lockup - not on the front drive )

Hey

Thanks for all the suggestions. I managed to get in contact with performance direct and they quoted me £217 for the year!! I thought this was a little steep! What really annoyed me was they took into account my age, surely this should not matter since the car isnt being driven!? They put me through to a sister company of theirs that was supposed to specialise in this type of insure, later to find that they didnt do it at all. Ive been trying to get through to norwich union today with no luck but will also try adrian flux. Ill keep u updated.

Sorry for the late response

When my insurance was up for renewal last month, I rang my insurance company and told them it was off the road being restored, and what i was going to do to it, I then informed them I wanted to keep it insured and they just charged me the normal renewal quote and told me to ring back when it was on the road and the changes had happened. Therefore my Mini is sat in bits in the garage and still has its agreed value attatched and the ncb building up. So I am not complaining as it will be back on the road before the year is out and will of gained a year ncb while sat there.

Thats not a bad idea Linzi but my mini hasnt had insurance since 2004!

However i have managed to get it insured. Got it through Adrian Flux(thanks Minili) , with agreed value, fire, theft and vandalism cover all for 50 quid for the year.

Not too bad i dont think! So thanks for all the suggestions
