Lost feeling in my left arm, fingers and the pain is just nasty.
Been to the osteopath twice now and 2nd time he advised me to see and get some medication from my GP: Codine and Diazepam. The pain is not allowing me to sleep at night, has anyone had this before?
Havent slept properly for 6days now, when I do drop off, I wake up screaming in pain. The painkillers wearing out after around 4hrs, leaving me 2hrs of carp.
Its getting me a bit down as it will be my little boys first birthday this Sat and I cant even pick him up or play with him, great start to 2009!
Any advice is most welcome.
Cheers,
D

as above if you say you have tried all the normal pain killers for a number of days without the pain easing im sure your GP will help you out

Wasn't in pain like you but my pain seemed like a permanent hangover.
I went to the docs and they didn't help ended up going to a chiropractor myself had to pay but it sorted me out in the end.
Sorry not much help

Somehow I've managed to trap a nerve in my neck and I'm in agony.

HAD EXACTLY THE SAME.
Mine basically is linked to a few Spine Diseases that were dormant until I had a car crash which snapped thirteen of my disks ( they were already weak apparantly )
I would advise your doctor that you have seen an osteopath, are in extreme pain, explain the symptons through your arm ( sounds like its pinching in your lower neck ) and ask him/her to refer you to a orthapaedic. Not an Osteopath..... they are just bone breakers !
The doctor SHOULD also if you are getting symptons down your arm advise physio to try to release the nerve, an MRI to see why its pinching, or send you to an orthapaedic who will arrange the other two on your behalf.
Is the loss of feeling also accompanied by sharp sort of pins and needles ( only about 100 times as painful ) and is it effecting just one or two of your fingers. Please advise which ones. ( basically, depending which fingers are getting the numbness, determines almost exactly to where the nerve is pinching.
How did you do it ? Was it a sharp turn or just happened ? Put some warm sort of deep heat gel on the shoulder and neck of the side thats hurting, or possibly heat a towel on a radiator or in the tmble and put that over your shoulders. It will ease it a bit.
You have to get the muscles to relax or the nerve will keep pinching, and because its pinching the muscles contract. Visious circle. Get comfy, put the heat on it, put a film on and relax !
Make sure you lie on your back to sleep and "roll" part of the pillow under your neck to give extra support. Will feel strange for a moment but should get better.
I am full of metal rods in my back, and have cages, plates and false disks in my neck so pinch these bloody nerves all the time. Its not mice, and you don't know neck pain until it happens !
Good luck at the doc's.
Diazepam are highly addictive, so try to get DICLOFENAC instead ! Thats the Muscle relaxant. For pain, he should give you codine ( but it won't work ) tramadol ( which works very well with diclofenac ) or even as high as slow release morphine tablets.

Thanks, don't laugh but I did it when my son pushed me out of my bed whilst I was in a deep sleep. It didn't seem too bad at the time but has now developed into this, excuse the pun, pain in the neck. I've lost all feeling in my fingers on my left hand side, which has work out quite well for my teething son I guess....

I had surgery to put the nerve back in its location (cubital tunnel or something like that) in Aug 07 , as it was moving around from
one side of my elbow to the other causing the same symptoms as yours, pins and needles in last two fingers and shooting pains up my arm.
The surgeon told me , when I woke up that he had to "gouge out a lot of scar tissue to be able to pop the nerve back in".
From that day to this I have had severe pain in the elbow joint but fortunately the pins and needles have subsided.
Today I saw my specialist and he is hoping to move the nerve to the front of my elbow and this should resolve the problem.
The delay has been caused by the scar from the last op not healing properly and needing treatment to settle down.
I am have been taking tramadol for the last 12 months and sometimes add to it with ibuprofen and paracetomol but
to be honest they dont seem to make much difference.
The Thing I find hardest to deal with is the lack of sleep which then leads to bouts of grumpiness.
That and being unable to get involved with ordinary family stuff.
I sympathise about missing out on the little uns birthday fun, my daughter is now 10 and I have been
having surgery since 99 on both wrists and now my elbow (9 ops total) but you do what you can.
Hopefully your probs will be shorter than that and you can get back to some normality soon
good Luck
Chris

Diazepam and Diclofenac are for different things. Diazepam is Valium and works on your nerves, it doesn't stop pain but stops your brain reacting to it instead. Diclofenac is the anti-inflammatory that I warned you about in the PM, the one that shreads your stomach. There is now an alternative (I can't remember the name) as I said but it's quite new and your health authority may not give it. It may only be a hospital drug at present. Tramadol is the weaker version of what I told you about and works well.
Apologies. I take so many tablets I forget . Or is that just a side effect ?!? as my memory is going down hill fast.
I meant " GABAPENTIN " as the nerve tablets. Yes it can be addictive, just not as much as the Diazepam. And it doesn't make you as drowzy as diazepam can.
I take Gabapentin, Diclofenac, Paracetemol, Morphine Solution, and Slow Release Morphine Tablets ( 60mg a day )..... so i'm always happy !!!!!!!!!!

I feel for you! My Dad had this a few years back and bless him he was in agony. He lost the feeling to his hand too!
He had physio on it, but still hurt, but might be worth a try if it eases it
I sometimes have problems with my back / shoulders and neck, not trapped nerve but i know how damn painful that is, to the point of tears sometimes, so I really do feel your pain!!
I hope its ok soon!!

Thanks for all your advice.
Went to see the doctor today, advised me to stay on the current medication till middle of next week. If theres no improvement then they will change the medication. As someone said the lack of sleep makes you into one grumpy old git.
Cheers guys,
D
