Anew engine is now not required as Outcast came over and had a look and said the timing belt was probably the cause of the noise, as the AAman said it sounded like the camshaft.
We took the cover off and found that the tensioner had sheared, problem solved.
Am now getting a complete new timing chain and seals as engine has just under 100,000 miles on the clock.
Thanks Outcast.

If you hear a funny ticking noise that could be the cause.
Lucky it did not get caught in the chain and trash the engine,so now we can put the money towards getting some new panels for her mini, it certainly saved a few quid.

after replacing the timing chain and fittings will it take a long time for the oil to work it's way arond the chain and would this make it noisey like a tappety noise until then.

After replacing the cam followers done by Bluemini many thanks at a bit of a mare of a job. However the noise is still there so he suggested replacing the petrol pump, but we were thinking that if that doesn't solve it we will have to replace the engine. So we have had the possible offer of 998 metro engine, will we have to make any major changes to the car or will it fit straight in with out any conversion.
Many thanks Sean.

Have you tried the guy out at ivybridge? He has a few engines sat around i think.
My old 998 did the same thing snapped the chain tensioner, before realising this was the problem i put on a new alternator and water pump thinking it may have been these bearings.
And the metro engine pretty much all is the same possibly the ignition will be different but there are wiring diagrams on the forum, and a transferal of mounts but thats about all i had to do when i put a metro 1275 in mine.

Its no big deal swapping engines and fitting a metro one instead.
Check that fuel pump first tho.
