been slowly stripping down the 1275 and finally just got the head off, everything has been covered in mayonase. But there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the head gasket, what else could it be?
HELP!
Thanks
Mark

mayonaise = water oil mix, which the least serious cause of is head gasket... if the gaskets not damaged even check the laminates, check the faces of the block and head for flatness, then failing that, start looking for cracks.

I've never heard of or seen a crack between the oil and waterways on an A-series block, and the chances of you finding any (even if there were) would be slim.

More likely is a warped block-or-head face or as mentioned the head gasket.

And a small leak between the oil and water in the head gasket won't be easy to identify, if at all.

If you are worried get the block and head checked and skimmed if needed. Otherwise a new head gasket will probably cure any leak.

it could also be condensation in the rocker cover. if it car is used for short trips only it is very possible.

take it for a run and let it get hot and see if it clears up.

Mmm, before me mate crashed it it was only used for short trips, (about 10 pound a week if that) I doubt it really warmed up!

I have, and there's a couple which are really easy to make happen if you build the motor badly.

If you use screws which are too long for the oil pump or put instant gasket behind it (god knows why anyone would) then it's really easy to punch through into the water jacket with one of the screws (or the high pressure the instant gasket will cause in the hole as you wind the screw into it).

The same can happen if you have too much crud in the bottom of the head stud tappings when you wind them in. As above if there's grease and gunge in the threads you can build really high pressures in the holes which will blow the bottoms of them out eventually. This is also a good way to prevent your head from tightening down fully.

But neither of these is very likely. As has been said it probably is your head gasket, they don't have to have dirty great holes in them to have failed.
