1.0" = 25.4mm. So to work back and forth multiply or divide using that. So - 0.3mm = 0.3 divided by 25.4 = 0.012". Yes that's bad. It should be 0.003" to 0.006" (0.003 x 25.4 = 0.076mm to 0.006 x 25.4 = 0.15mm). Often the extra large gap is caused by the front retaining 'C' clip wearing. This happens when you change gear, it bashes the primary gear up against the retaining washer which in turn whacks the C-clip. If you look at the C-clip you will see one side has grooves worn in to it. If you are lucky the other side will still be pretty flat - so just trun the C-clip around and re-measure. If it doesn't get the gap down, you will need to measure the bronze thrust washer to see what thickness it is and refer to one of the Mini specialists sites for alternative sizes. If yiou already have the largest or second to largest thrust washer, you will need to buy a new retaining C-clip and backing washer first - then re-measure and take it from there. KC

thanks, will retry the gap as you have suggested....will keep you posted

I had the thrust washer measured today it came in at 3.00mm ( strange coincidence that its0.3mm the gap!) so back on the maths that works out at 0.12"

just so I know what would too much end play manifest itself as...noise, rattle or worse?

Primarily, you'd probably notice an excess of oil into the clutch housing past the primary seal, as the primary gear moves backwards and forwards depending upon load, as you carry on using the engine, the endfloat will progrssively increase and eventually....

worse...

Likelyhood that the bronze bush would ultimately disintegrate, taking the primary gear, crank, idler and gearbox with it... but that would take a while.

I have looked at the C washer, it only has a very faint ridge on one side (hardly noticable), I turned this and remeasured the gap, still at 0.3mm, with my thrust washer being 3.00mm the total is 3.3mm, if I subtract the allowed end float of .101 this leaves me with 3.199 which is I believe .126"

so....

is my train of thought good?

&

can I get a thrust washer in this size, if so where from (998 mini)

cheers

MiniSpares has no stock, but MiniSport may have a 22A450 which is the thickest thrust washer for a 998 (.120) This combined with a C washer may get you within the spec end float.

Yeah, I think so, I'm just about to order one as I'm in exactly the same boat!

Gonna treat myself to a new C washer and backing plate as well :P
