My mini has a leak from the driveshaft rubber thing. I do not know whether this rubber is the driveshaft part or the diff part.

Either way I'll simply swap out the driveshaft/hub/caliper/brakes assembly out from my 1275GT onto my 1990 mini since it wont take long, and the 1275GT doesn't seem to leak from that area.

What puzzles me is that people keep saying how a pot joint remover is required etc. but on the GT i managed to take off the whole assembly in a few minutes. Only thing involved was to separate the balljoints on the hub, take off the nuts, and pull the whole thing out, complete with driveshaft out of the engine! The driveshaft had this thing on the gearbox end that had a whole bunch of metal balls in it... It didnt click into the diff or anything... I was rather surprised at how easy it came out... Is it meant to be like that?

If it is meant to be like that I'll simply swap the driver's side assembly over onto Stacy (1990 mini) and hopefully the oil leak will stop!

It leaks only when I jack up the car, then it drips every 20-30 seconds. If I leave the car on the ground it leaks about 2 drops a week.

Sounds like ur driveshaft seal is worn, no big deal to swap tho. Jus take the old one out and press tap the new one in.

The pot joint thing... You didnt take the pot joint out by the sound of it. All you did was take the CV joint out of the pot joint. To get the pot joint out you need to release it from the diff, I use a fork type ball joint splitter, a gentle tap and it releases it from the spring clip on the diff. Problem with takin the pot joint out o the drive shaft is that it wont go thru the hole in the subframe, its a fraction too big :)

Whatever I took out, is that enough to replace the leaky seal? :)

If you have a look were the pot joint comes out of the gear box you'll see a black rubber seal, this is most likely what is leaking. Over here they are about £2 to buy and takes bout half an hour to replace...

If it aint leaking too badly then I would leave it alone...

The rubber thing on the diff end or the driveshaft end? :)

I absolutely hate oil leaks, I can't stand it. That and dents get to me the most

hi pavel
replacing the seal is as straight forward as anyother seal, prise out old seal with a largish screwdriver, and then tap the new seal inyo place **WARNING**when doing this use a socket that is the same size as the seal as a mandrel to seat the seal square, also this way the seal doesn't get damaged or twisted when you are trying to tap it in, if you dont have the right size socket, sometimes a good piece of wood also does the trick..
