I now the inevitable reply will be no, but just in case it isn't...
After fitting my engine over the past few days, water pump, alternator, fan belt, radiator, hoses, manifold and carb I've decided its time to fit the speedo cable...

Easy way would be to take the engine out!!!
Well maybe it would just be a less stressfull way? :erm:

not an easy job with the engine in! it's do-able but I cut my arm to shreds doing it! also if you don't get it in dead straight... you'll snap it when you start driving!

have done this a couple of times...the way i did it was to grease my arm with loads of vaseline (i used grease the first time till someone told me it was bad for you) then you can slide it down the back of the engine and hopefully it will undo by hand....don't laugh...it really worked for me

Have you filled the engine with coolant yet? If not then take the rad back out, that makes it a lot easier.

If the rad is filled, use a 7/16 AF spanner to remove the bolt holding the cable's nylon flange/adapter to the gearbox. That will free the whole speedo cable's lower end so you can replace the cable "up top". Not easy, but easier than getting your arm in that little space to unscrew the cable itself.

The advantage of being slightly on the skinny side; managed to screw i back on without too much hassle in about 10-15 minutes! Works and everything!

Sounds like your speedo is a little on the buggered side
or the cable is snapped and it somehow only works when you are going slower.
