I've decided its way too unsafe to drive without a bolt through my tie-bar to the engine, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a link to the correct bolt on minispares or somewhere similar? Its a '92 injection cooper if it makes a difference (below shows where the bolt should go).
Any help much appreciated. Cheers. Guido.
Which bolt?

The long bolt is part number BH505181, the short one is SH505051. You do also have the load spreader plate which fits outside the rod don't you? without it the long bolt will snap very quickly. You should have a large flat spacer which fits against the engine (important) then the steady rod then the reinforcing bracket, all held in with two bolts.

great! Thanks!
...do you know the part numbers for the other stuff? I think I'm missing it all... I only seem to remember one bolt though..?

Ok, so the first thing against the side of the block should be a plate (21A1107) which is what acts to compress the inner side of the bush. You might have trouble finding it as Rover deleted it at some point but the steady rod lasts a lot longer with it fitted and I can't work out why it was deleted. Then you have the rod itself (with it's bushes and spacer tube) then you have the rod bracket (21A2387). The bracket is what supports the outside edge of the bolt and compresses the outer side of the bush. Without this bracket your steady rod isn't doing much and the bolt is under a lot of load. The bracket spreads the load forward to another shorter screw fitted into the other hole in the block. The long bolt is either part BH605151 or BH505181 and the short one is SH505051 or SH605051. There are two part numbers quoted for each bolt as the 605 series are UNF and the 505 are UNC, the thread used can depend on the age of your block. I personally would order one of each and fit the right one when I got them as these bolts really do only cost pence each.

Wow, thanks so much Dan! You really are a life-saver! ...your right about having trouble finding the plate, but if I bought THIS (also shown below), could I use the plates from this kit? (Part no. MSSK1301 )
Cheers.
edit: I think it says something about a thermostat on the item description but I've just had a look in my engine and can't seem to find anything that looks anything like this kit near my thermostat...
Cheers.

That's an aftermarket ultimate engine steady. You won't have anything like that as standard and there's no parts in that that will be of use to you. What you can use instead of the plate is a huge penny/repair/mudflap washer. You can find them at most places, just don't use one that's too thick, make sure the hole in the middle is large enough for the bolt and the outside diameter is about the same as the stabiliser bushes.
