I recently rebuilt my 1.3 cooper SPI engine. Had a short engine done by Rob Walker Engineering, and I just cleaned the head up as it was in good nick, changed the valve seals, and re-lapped the valves. The engine runs well, has plenty of power and torque, unless I’m very much mistaken there is definitely petrol in my oil. When I take the rocker cap off you can smell the fuel, also if you wipe oil of the dip stick.....
Has anyone got any ideas? I’ve taken the injection system of and now have a mechanical fuel pump, I’ve checked that it's not leaking..
Any ideas?

you'll be luck to spot petrol in oil, as all it'll do is thin it out.. are you sure it's not water ?

I've seen mechanical fuel pumps fail and leak petrol into the oil, but if you've checked that already I don't know what to suggest. There's not still an SPI in tank electrical pump running is there?

Yeah the electric pump is still in the tank but no longer wired in. The return fuel pipe is capped off and it's just running the mechanical fuel pump..... i don't think it's over fueling as it sailed the emmissions on the MOT and it's not running rich.. The engine is only just run in so i would hope it's not ring blow by? or can that happen?
Obviuosly i can't see the petrol in the oil, but it smells of petrol and it's fairly strong... i just don't get it. should it smell of fuel anyway? i've never noticed it on any other minis i've owned?

Just an idea is your float chamber overflowing and you can smell the fuel from that rather from the oil?

Slighty confused........did you fit the mechanical fuel pump BEFORE you noticed petrol in the oil?? If so then the pump may well be the problem.....just a pinprick in the diaphram will pump fuel into the sump !!!
Whatever the problem is DO NOT drive the car until you have solved it AND changed the oil !!! Even a small amount of fuel can thin the oil dramatically and this will greatly increase bearing wear !!!!!
