I have a j plate rover mini with a 1275 conversion, the orange light on the dash will not go out till i accelerate if i let of the accelerater it turns back on, also when stopped at a junction the car now often stutters then dies.
Please help ive checked all the wiring and that seems in order !
thanks,

The oil pressure light? Have you checked the oil?

the orange light indicates oil pressure. With a standard oil pressure switch it goes out at roughly 3-4psi I believe.
A good engine when hot should idle at at least 30-35 psi really, maybe a bit less if very hot.
I'd change your oil pressure switch soon, and see if it still occurs. If it does, then it may be time to start looking at an engine rebuild, as it should be managing more than 3psi at idle. Chances are the main and big end bearings and the oil pump are worn.
Do you know if the engine has an uprated oil pressure switch, set to come on at 22 psi?
What sort of revs to you need to reach before the light goes out?
To prevent the stuttering and stalling as a temporary measure you can turn the idle up a bit, this will hopefully cure that, but the engine might need a good tune if it has any performance bits fitted.
But get that light investigated, it is NOT GOOD for the oil pressure light to come on at any point when driving.

I'd be fitting an oil pressure guage, as only having the oil light on a performance motor is just waiting for dissaster...
Basically, unless the switch is f**ked, then your engine will be.. certainly new bigends, and mains, and you'll be realy lucky to get away without regrinding the crank...
Personally I would not be driving it anywhere in that condition.

I had the same problem with my J plate cooper, found out the oil was the wrong grade some plonker put 5w30 in it.
try dropping the oil and put 20w50 in it and see this solved my oil pressure problem.
it is worth putting a oil pressure gauge on the car too.
as for oil try the tesco value oil its cheap and not bad quality only 94p a litre.

what the chap above said!
If its not hold oil pressure it could do with an oil change

Also check the oil pressure relief valve this may be stuck open.
its may be worth changing this to a ball bearing type that mini spares sell

Change the filter while you are doing the oil
