Cant believe that no one uses Meguiar's
http://meguiars.co.uk/
Check the site out it has an exellent guide to Washing/Polishing/Waxing.

Teapot don't use washing up liquid it breaks down the wax and leaves the paint unprotected and open to oxidation, this is what makes it go dull.
I use it to strip the wax prior to polishing then wax after polishing.
Using the NXT products at the minute, very good easy to apply wipe on wipe off. No residue and an excellent finish. Then after each wash using meguiars shampoo, which does not strip the polish I use NXT top up, to top up the wax finish. Its so easy to use. Its available in most Halfords now or via mail order from the site.
Another good site for advise and products is
http://www.autopia-carcare.com/
Its an american site but very good, bought at porta polisher from them with all the pads etc, recieved it in 3 days no import duty as they marked the value down so I did not have to pay any
